Sourcing Thai Products for Indonesia and Malaysia: A Buyer's Guide

Sourcing Thai Products for Indonesia and Malaysia: A Buyer's Guide

This article is general information for reference only; please confirm current import and labelling rules with your local authority or customs broker.

Why Indonesian and Malaysian buyers look to Thailand

Indonesia and Malaysia are close neighbours of Thailand, and Thai consumer brands are already familiar to many shoppers there through travel, social media and cross-border online shopping. Beauty, personal care, snacks and traditional balms are everyday purchases, which makes them a natural fit for importers, distributors and online resellers who want products with built-in recognition.

Both markets are also large, young and strongly online. Short-video platforms and marketplaces drive discovery, so products that look good, are easy to explain and suit gifting tend to travel well.

Product categories that tend to suit these markets

Every business is different, but these categories are good starting points for research:

Halal, labelling and registration: do your homework first

For Muslim-majority and multi-faith markets, halal expectations matter, especially for food, personal care and anything applied to the body or consumed. Do not assume that a product is acceptable simply because it sells well elsewhere. Check what your market requires, which bodies recognise which certification, and whether your customers expect a specific logo on the pack.

Cosmetics, supplements, traditional remedies and foods are also regulated differently in each country, and may require product registration, notification, local-language labelling or a licensed importer. These rules change from time to time. Treat this article as a starting point and confirm current requirements with your national authority or a customs broker before you place an order. Please also remember that product claims on a pack may not be permitted in your market.

Start with a focused first order

A common mistake is trying to import every category at once. Pick one or two categories, a small number of brands, and a limited range of sizes. This keeps stock manageable, makes it easier to learn the import process and lets you see what your customers actually buy.

Think about how you will sell. A reseller on a marketplace may prefer small, visual, giftable items. A shop owner may want everyday lines that sell steadily. A distributor may want a wider catalogue to offer to several outlets. Tell our team your business model and they can advise suitable options.

Pricing and landed cost

Your selling price must cover more than the product. Add freight, insurance if used, customs duties and taxes, clearance fees, local transport, storage, packaging, platform or retail margin, marketing, and an allowance for damage and returns. Calculate the full landed cost per unit before you decide on a shelf price.

Exchange rates matter too. A product that looks affordable in baht may look different in rupiah or ringgit a month later, so build a small buffer into your pricing.

Shipping and documents

Most buyers in the region combine several products into one consolidated shipment to share freight cost. Shipping method, timing and cost depend on the product mix and destination, and are confirmed in the quotation. Typical paperwork includes a commercial invoice, a packing list and a transport document, with extra papers sometimes requested by your authorities.

ThaiNex supports and coordinates shipping and export documents from Bangkok through trusted international logistics partners. Import permits, customs clearance, duties and local compliance remain the importer's responsibility, so please involve a broker in your country early. Our guide to trade terms for importers may help you compare quotations.

Selling online and offline

Many importers sell through several channels at the same time: a marketplace store, social media, a physical shop and sometimes business customers. Use consistent product names and clear photos across channels, keep accurate expiry information, and respond quickly to customer questions.

If you would rather build a small business in your own country with sourcing support from Bangkok, you can also look at the ThaiNex Seller Partner programme. For a closer look at other regional markets, see our guides for the Philippines and the UAE.

Visiting Bangkok to see products in person

Buyers from Indonesia and Malaysia often combine a trip to Bangkok with sourcing. The ThaiNex store on the 6th floor of Big C Ratchadamri lets you handle products, compare sizes and plan an order. Opening hours and stock can change, so please contact our team before you travel.
